The Faculty of Engineering, Soka University’s first faculty of science and technology, was established in April 1991. It was comprised initially of two departments: the Department of Information Systems Science and the Department of Bioengineering, later renamed as the Department of Bioinformatics. In April 2003, a third department, the Department of Environmental Engineering for Symbiosis, was established.
“Life,” “information” and “the environment” are keywords in science and technology for a sustainable future. Our faculty looks to the future from these three vital areas of science and technology. Through creative interdisciplinary collaboration in education and research among the three departments, we hope to develop new scholarship for the creative coexistence of humanity, and to make significant contributions to the development of humanistic science and technology.
The founding principles of Soka University set forth by the founder, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, are: 1) Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education; 2) Be the cradle of a new culture; and 3) Be a fortress for the peace of humankind. We at the Faculty of Engineering share the objectives represented by these principles, focusing on fostering humanistic individuals whose specialized knowledge of science and technology is grounded in a well-rounded education and complemented by a rich personal integrity. Science and technology can be a double-edged sword. In order for science and technology to truly serve human well-being and social development, it is vital to nurture the humanity of the researchers and engineers who are engaged in these fields. The core of Soka education is its student-centered humanistic education and care for each student.
