Contemporary Good Practices Program

Ministry selects Soka's innovative Web-based educational tool

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan has recognized a Web-based educational tool developed by Soka University that allows students to collaborate in the creation of quizzes. The ministry cited the educational tool under its "Endeavors to Meet Contemporary Educational Needs Assistance Programs (Contemporary Good Practice)" in 2007.

The application is designed to encourage students to take the initiative in developing test questions for the subjects of their choice. It promotes interactive and cooperative learning among students, as well as between students and teaching staff. It also enhances educational effectiveness in the subjects that require dissertation and deductive thinking ability through Web-based discussions.

Questionnaires on lectures at Soka University since 1999 have revealed that many students seek to increase the hours of study outside class. The web-based tool increases self-directed learning opportunities and spurs competition in learning among students through a group review system of test questions created. The teaching staff refines the questions and incorporates them in online exams. The e-learning content is stored in a database for future use.

The ministry's official designation for the Soka application is "Promotion of self-disciplined learning using WBT (Web-Based Training) System—ICT (Information and Communication Technology) which allows students cooperative creation of test questions." The application, which allows students to create questions for examinations, was chosen among programs submitted by 100 institutions throughout the nation.
