A symposium commemorating the 40th anniversary of Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda’s proposal to normalize relations between China and Japan was held at Soka University on September 14. The symposium examined the past and present impact of the breakthrough proposal on Sino-Japanese relations, as well as future evolution of their relationship. Among the lecturers were Professor Wang Jisi, Dean of International Studies at Peking University; Professor Jin Xide, Institute of Japanese Studies Deputy Director at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Satoshi Amako, Dean of Waseda University’s Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies; and Soka University Deputy Vice President Tadashige Takamura.
In his lecture, Professor Jin described the Soka University founder’s proposal as being both bold and insightful, particularly in light of the Cold War tensions and historical bilateral differences in which it was made. Professor Amako agreed, noting that it transcended traditional frameworks, and called for Sino-Japanese cooperation in establishing the Council on East Asian Community and other international systems to enhance peace and stability in global society.
