Soka University welcomed representatives from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) of Indonesia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, or National University of Malaysia) to its Hachioji campus on November 28. President Dr. Priyo Suprobo led the ITS delegation; Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Hassan Basri represented the Malaysian institution. ITS ranks among Indonesia’s most prestigious technology institutes, while UKM is a premier seat of higher learning in Malaysia. The two institutions took part in the International Symposium on Waste Management for Sustainable Development in Asia, which Soka University hosted that day. Part of a broad research and academic exchange initiative between ITS and Faculty of Engineering, Soka University launched in 2006, the symposium included reports and proposals on biomass energy, artificial intelligence, solid waste disposal and environmental education by researchers from the three participating universities. Among their core focus was waste management programs adapted to the needs and capacities of Indonesia, with the results intended to be readily applicable to other emerging countries. Soka University is also working with ITS in a research project, Environmental Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainable Development (SEED), in part to identify new areas of research for future collaborative works. On November 11, ITS conferred Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda with its first-ever International Cooperation Award, in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of education worldwide. |
