Indonesian VP conferred Soka honorary doctorate

2009.02.02

On February 2, Soka University paid tribute to Indonesian Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla by conferring an honorary doctorate for his contribution to world peace and conflict resolution. Following the conferral ceremony, the vice president delivered a commemorative address on peace and nation building.

Together with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Vice President Kalla--who also chairs the ruling Golkar Party—was elected in the first direct presidential elections held in Indonesia in October 2004. He gained international recognition as the principal architect of the 2005 peace agreement that ended decades-long fighting in Aceh. He was also instrumental in the mediation between warring Muslim and Christian groups in the Central Sulawesi town of Poso.

In his commemorative address, the Indonesian vice president underscored the role of peace in facilitating political and economic development, and maintained that dialogue was crucial in transcending religious and cultural differences.

Also attending the conferral ceremony was Indonesian Minister of National Education Bambang Soedibyo and Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Jusuf Anwar.

Japan was the first of four countries that Vice President Kalla will visit. He is scheduled to speak at the United States Congress’ National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC on February 5, an event that President Barack Obama will also attend.
