On February 26, Soka University hosted a symposium on a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology initiative promoting venture businesses based on partnerships between the government, industry and universities at the Student Hall on Thursday. Nihon Electric Wire & Cable Co., Ltd., Core System Co. of South Korea and the Japan Patent Attorneys Association were among the participants of the event. Based on a theme offering ground-level perspectives of a technology startup spawned from university research, the symposium also discussed larger issues, from the strategic creation and exploitation of intellectual properties to the social responsibilities and mission of the university. Since the dedication of the Faculty of Engineering in 1991, Soka University has actively engaged in the creation and development of intellectual assets as part of its contributive commitment to society. To date, the school has applied for 130 intellectual property patents, of which 27 were transferred to the private sector. Soka has also founded eight technology startups that have since developed and marketed an array of new products and services. Soka has worked closely with the education ministry’s partnership initiative, establishing a special liaison office and adopting policy guidelines further clarifying its manifold social responsibilities. It also recently set up a special task force to enhance its intellectual property strategies to better serve those responsibilities. “Soon to commemorate its 40th anniversary, Soka University will leverage and enrich its research and educational capacities to better serve society and local communities by reinforcing even further our partnership with society at large,” said university president Hideo Yamamoto. |
