2009.03.21

The 35th Soka University and 23rd Soka Women’s College graduation ceremony was held at the Ikeda Auditorium on March 21. On the occasion, Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda was conferred an honorary doctorate from University College South of Denmark, the 250th academic honor he has received to date.

A total of 2,996 men and women received baccalaureate, postgraduate and doctorate degrees, including diplomas from the two-year Soka Women’s College and certificates of completion from Soka University’s correspondence program. Selected students were also given awards in recognition of their academic excellence and contributions to campus activities.

Rector Soren Vang Rasmussen led the delegation from University College South, a national university with an enrollment of some 3,600 that has campuses in four major cities. The Danish institution conferred the degree in recognition of the Soka University founder’s contributions to “Education for Life.”

Soka Women’s College President Katsuhiko Fukushima delivered the opening address. In his address, Soka University President Hideo Yamamoto urged the graduating students to achieve success in whatever path they choose, bearing great hope and the pride of having studied at Soka.

Jim Garrison, president of the John Dewey Society and Virginia Tech professor of the philosophy of education, and Joseph Camilleri, professor of international relations at La Trobe University in Australia and director of its Centre for Dialogue, were among the guests and dignitaries attending the ceremony.
