Soka co-hosts Alliance symposium with Toda peace institute

2009.03.23

Soka University and the Toda Institute of Global Peace and Policy Research co-hosted “The Alliance of Civilizations: Possible Pathways for Asia Pacific,” a symposium on a collaborative effort of governments and NGOs to bridge the manifold divides in an increasingly fractured world.

The Alliance was established in 2005 at the initiative of the Spanish and Turkish governments under the auspices of the United Nations in the hope of employing “new instruments” to cope with diversity in an era of rapid globalization.

In his keynote address, Joseph A. Camilleri, professor of international relations at Australia’s La Trobe University and director of its Centre for Dialogue, noted that the Alliance of civilizations “may well become such an instrument” to foster “understanding and collaborations among cultures, religions and civilizations in the Asia-Pacific region, as much within as between countries.”

The symposium featured presentations from Yasukuni Enoki, former Japanese ambassador to India; Soka economics professor Isao Takagi; and Dr. Olivier Urbain, director of Toda peace think tank, which was also established by Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda.
