Soka University and Soka Women’s College held their 39th and 25th entrance ceremony respectively at the Ikeda Auditorium on Thursday. Among the dignitaries attending the event were President Soon-Kap Kim and other officials from Korea Maritime University, a delegation from Germany’s Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich, and a youth goodwill delegation from China. Following the opening address by newly appointed Soka Women’s College President Hideaki Ishii, some 3,500 newly enrolled students—including 1,827 undergraduates, 175 postgraduates and 120 foreign exchange students from 20 countries for Soka and 330 students of the college—were introduced. Soka University President Hideo Yamamoto urged them to spend their time at Soka “with high aspirations and devotion to learning.” During the ceremony, Korea Maritime University (KMU) conferred a special professorship on Soka founder Daisaku Ikeda in recognition for his contributions to Korea-Japan relations and advancement of human rights for Koreans living in Japan. The Busan-based KMU is a prestigious national institution with an enrollment of more than 10,000 students. Prior to the ceremony, 32 students and one student organization was awarded the annual Soka University Da Vinci Award for academic and research excellence. |
