Soka University held an opening ceremony on September 8 commemorating the completion of two new facilities, the Tagore Square and Large Classroom Building (LCB). The two-storied facility features two large multimedia halls capable of seating a total of 862 students, and a large cafeteria, including a 120-seat terrace. With roof greening and plans to install a 30 kilowatt solar panel array, the LCB will also be one of the most eco-friendly structures on campus. Located in front of the LCB is the newly erected Tagore Square. Named after the renowned Bengali polymath, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), the square is dominated by a 5.3-meter-tall statue (including its base) of Tagore, which was donated to the school by Mr. Niranjan Desai, former director general of Indian Council for Culture Relations, on his visit to Soka in November 1994. At the statue’s base, the following passage from Tagore is inscribed: It is the mission of civilization to bring unity among people and establish peace and harmony. Soka University Board of Trustee Yasunori Tashiro delivered the opening address at the ceremony. Soka University President Hideo Yamamoto also spoke, expressing his hope that Soka students would draw inspiration from the Bengali poet, novelist, musician and playwright in their studies as well as their contributions to the cause of peace, cultural exchange and education. |
