Dr. Shuji Nakamura, University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) professor of materials and electrical and computer engineering who also directs the school’s Solid State Lighting and Energy Center, delivered a special address at Soka University on October 29. Dr. Nakamura is the inventor of the blue laser diode, which is used in Blu-ray discs. In his lecture, Dr. Nakamura—who has won numerous prizes and awards for his research, including the 2009 Harvey Prize from Israel’s Technion—related episodes from the blue laser diode development program, which he conducted while employed at Nichia Corporation based in Tokushima, Japan, in the 1990s. He also spoke on the importance of intellectual property and entrepreneurship, urging students to persevere over every task and challenge they tackle to achieve ultimate success. The special lecture was held under the auspices of a 2009 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology program to strengthen ties between academia—including Soka University—private sector and the government in order to advance research that is deemed strategic to national development. Soka University President Hideo Yamamoto gave the closing remarks, noting that contributing to society through education and scientific research was a core commitment of the university. |
