New Zealand peace expert lectures at Soka

2009.11.20

Professor Kevin P. Clements, Director of the New Zealand Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, spoke at Soka University on Friday. In his lecture, “Enlarging Boundaries of Compassion in a Time of Global Crisis,” Prof. Clements contends that the principal elements that have sustained the survival of the human species have not been politics or power structures, but empathy and altruism. He said the key for humankind to prevail over the many crises it faces today is to acknowledge, nurture and expand our capacity for empathy and compassion. A Q&A session followed the lecture.

Prof. Clements, who is also Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association, is an authority on peace studies and conflict transformation. He is the former Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and served as the secretary general of International Alert, one of the world’s largest NGOs working on conflict transformation, from January 1999 to September 2003.
