A team of Soka University students won a competition organized each year by the Hachioji College Community & Culture Fureai (“interaction”) Foundation that awards student-developed community-building projects. The Soka team, which won for the second consecutive year, were comprised of economics majors in Prof. Akio Nishiura’s seminar. They carried out a project over an eight-month period to recover and recycle rare metals from disposed portable electronics products. The Soka team beat out nine competing teams from six universities. Meanwhile, last year’s winners of Prof. Nishiura’s seminar team received a certificate of appreciation from Hachioji City Mayor Ryuichi Kurosu for developing a special children’s book addressing consumer concerns over food safety. The city has since published a picture book as a collaborative venture with the Soka students that will be used in Hachioji public elementary schools based on their project. In addition, the team of engineering majors in Prof. Shinsaku Maruta’s seminar was the winner of the best presentation award. |
