Soka University hosted its annual New Year’s reception for foreign students at the New Loire Cafeteria, with 128 people undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty members on academic exchange programs, as well as members of their families, attending the event. New Year’s is a major holiday in Japan and the vast majority of Soka students return to their families to celebrate the occasion. At the suggestion of Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda, the institution has organized since 1999 a special reception for foreign students enrolled at Soka who live in on-campus dormitories. The event features osechi, Japanese cuisine traditionally eaten during the New Year holidays, sushi and other dishes. As part of the festivities, participants perform songs and dances. Among the school administrators who took part in the event were Board of Trustees Chair Yasunori Tashiro and Soka University President Hideo Yamamoto. |
