Campus-wide disaster response drill set for September
2010.07.14
Soka University and Soka Women’s College will hold a campus-wide general disaster response exercise on September 17 for the first time. Held with the full backing of the Hachioji City Fire Department, the drill aims to enhance the awareness and coordinate activities of students and faculty members to cope with a major disaster. The university and college are thus calling on all students and faculty members to take part in the exercise.
- Date: September 17, 2010 (Friday)
- Time: 11:50-13:20
- Participants: All students and members of faculty
- Second Period classes will be held as scheduled, although it will end at 11:50 that day instead of 12:15 as usual. Third Period classes will also be held, but will start from 13:20, 15 minutes later than usual.
- The exercise will be based on the premise that Hachioji City was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of nearly 6.
- At 11:50, a campus-wide emergency public address announcement will be made that an earthquake has occurred.
- Classes will then be suspended and, under the supervision of their instructors, all students will be asked to evacuate to the No.1 Sports Field.
- At the field, the Hachioji Fire Department will be demonstrating a number of emergency response exercises, including a helicopter rescue operation. Students and faculty members will also have the opportunity to practice giving emergency first aid using the A E D (AED) unit and experience a major temblor and fire generated smoke on a firsthand basis.
- We recommend that you also test the emergency rations that will be dispensed at the university cafeterias (New Loire and New Prince Hall for Soka University students; New Princess Hall for Soka Women’s College students). Please note that the cafeterias and Student Hall will not be open for regular dining services during the exercise. Even if the exercise is cancelled due to rain, the facilities will be offering emergency rations during the lunch break.
- The drill will be cancelled in the event of rain. Should that be the case, notice of the cancellation will be made at the end of the First Period by campus-wide PA announcement.
- Students whose classes for that day start from the Third Period are asked to be in your classrooms by 13:20.
- Unless otherwise stated by the instructor, students who report to class after 13:50 will be considered absent.
- Participants are asked not to wear heels that day.
