The international symposium, which was organized and hosted by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology on June 20-24, addresses the manifold threats to coral reefs in the Asia Pacific region, including global climate change, and provides a forum to examine and promote solutions to meet the challenge.

Nakatomi’s award-winning abstract was on research examining the role of zooplankton in transferring energy and materials to different trophic levels, which are distinct segments in the marine food chain, and shedding new light on the ecosystem of coral reefs. The Soka student was chosen for his outstanding oral and poster presentation.
