2011.12.17: Soka University duo places second in English speech contest On December 17, two Soka University literature majors—Kimiko Hanazono and Kohei Sasaki, both juniors—won second prize in an English speech contest organized by the Kyoto University.
2011.11.11: Soka launches new safety verification system in times of disasters A special system to ascertain the safety of students, faculty members and administration staff is now in operation at Soka University.

2011.10.24: Soka professor wins top prize in Japanese art competition Soka University Department of Primary Education Professor Yoshiro Shimizu won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award in a competition sponsored by The Japan Art Institute, a nonprofit organization for the promotion of Japanese artists and their creations.
2011.10.21: Soka conducts its first full-scale disaster drill Soka University carried out its first full-scale disaster response exercise with some 4,000 students, as well as members of the faculty and administration on Friday, October 21.
2011.10.08: Soka University, Women’s College hold make-up graduation ceremony The 41st Soka University and 27th Soka Women’s College graduation ceremony was held at the Ikeda Auditorium on Saturday, October 8. The ceremony was originally scheduled to be held in March this year, but was delayed due to the giant earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011.
2011.10.06: Full-scale disaster drill to be conducted on Oct. 21 Soka University announced that it will conduct its first disaster response exercise that will include participation from the student body, faculty and administration. The drill, which will take place on Friday, October 21, will be held with the full cooperation of the Hachioji Fire Department. It aims to evaluate existing disaster management guidelines and upgrade preventative programs.
2011.09.23: Soka econ majors extend ERE streak to eight consecutive wins The Soka University team of nine economics majors captured first place in the 15th university-level Economics Record Examination (ERE) organized by a national association of economics education.
2011.09.12: 15% power reduction target for summer achieved Soka University has cleared its goal to reduce electricity consumption for July and August by 15%, the numerical target set by the government in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, and the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima prefecture.
2011.09.08: Soka students take part in March 11 calamity volunteer program The Consortium of Universities in Hachioji (TCUH), a nonprofit association comprised of 23 junior colleges and universities in the western suburbs of Tokyo and represents some 110,000 students, organized an eight-day volunteer program to Iwate prefecture.
2011.09.04: Soka judoists win 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in Tokyo contest The three-member team of Soka University women judoists won first, second and third places in a Tokyo regional championship held at the Nippon Budokan hall on September 4, earning the right to compete in the national championships that will be held in October.
2011.08.30: Faculty of Letters to offer new dual degree Soka University’s Faculty of Letters recently announced that it would be offering a dual degree (DD) in English Studies for Teaching from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom.
2011.07.21: Soka holds completion ceremony for international students On July 21, Soka University held a ceremony for a contingent of 50 international students from 30 universities and institutes who completed their one-year study abroad program at the Japanese school. President Hideo Yamamoto and Board of Trustees Chair Yasuhiro Tashiro attended the ceremony.
2011.07.21: Nine Soka groups to travel abroad this year Nine groups of Soka University undergraduates will take part in special summer exchange sessions to be held at universities abroad this year. The groups met for the first time on July 21.
2011.07.21: Soka hosts annual disaster drill Soka University hosted the 44th annual disaster training exercise at its main field on Thursday, July 21. Some 130 participants in 46 teams took part in the drill, which was organized by the Hachioji Fire Department and disaster management training committee of the city of Hachioji.
2011.07.21: Soka law faculty hosts mock citizen judge trial Soka University Faculty of Law Prof. Nobuyasu Kojima’s General Jurisprudence class conducted a mock citizen judge trial on June 29 and July 1. Some 360 first-year law majors took part in the simulation.
2011.07.20: School Advisory on Typhoon Ma-on Soka University will be holding its third and fourth period classes as scheduled for Wednesday, July 20, despite the issuing of a heavy rains / flooding alert as a result of Typhoon Ma-on, or Typhoon No. 6.

2011.07.07: Soka University scores high on Nikkei university survey In a three-month poll conducted by the Nikkei Career Magazine placement website hosted by Nikkei Human Resources, Soka University ranked 19th by undergraduate seniors and first-year postgraduates studying at 518 universities throughout Japan.

2011.06.26: Soka business admin professor wins BAA award Soka University Professor of Business Administration Shufuku Hiraoka’s research was awarded the Business Analysis Association (BAA) Award for 2011 by the group of professional managers and management experts in Japan.
2011.06.25: Soka women’s judo team wins national championship The three-member team of Soka University women judoists won the national championship hosted by the All Japan University Judo Federation at the Nippon Budokan hall on June 25.
2011.06.20: Soka management majors score in Nikkei contest A five-member team of Soka University management undergraduates was awarded for its report on small- and medium-sized businesses in the 11th Nikkei Stock League competition.
2011.06.06: 2011 summer session to be cancelled Soka University announced that it will be cancelling its 39th annual summer session slated for fiscal 2011 due to concerns over the electric power shortfall expected this summer.
2011.06.01: University, Women’s College announces energy conservation policy In response to government guidelines, Soka University and Soka Women’s College will be instituting an electric power conservation policy in order to reduce its energy consumption level by 15% from June to September 2011.
2011.05.29: Soka Univerity holds education seminar in Hiroshima, Fukuoka A symposium on higher education in the 21st century was held in the city of Hiroshima on May 28. Supported by the Chugoku Shimbun newspaper, the event featured Hong Kong-born singer, essayist and educator Agnes Chan as its keynote speaker.
2011.05.08: Chemical society honors Soka professor The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) announced that Masato Ito, professor of environmental engineering for symbiosis at Soka University, has won its annual award recognizing individuals for their service in advancing chemistry education.
2011.05.04: Soka University, Women’s College hold open-campus day Soka University and Soka Women’s College opened their campuses to the general public on Wednesday, May 4. Some 4,000 visitors attended the annual event, including junior high and senior high school students, their guardians, and even participants from abroad.
2011.05.02: Soka stem cell research published in U.S. science journal A new study by a team of Soka University researchers has been published in the April 2011 issue of Stem Cells, a leading scientific journal on the discipline in the United States. The team was led by cellular biologist Shoko Nishimura of the Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Bioinformatics.
2011.04.28: Soka University volunteers complete relief work A contingent of 107 Soka University students and members of the faculty and administration returned from Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, on Thursday, April 28, after engaging in relief work over two days.

2011.04.01: Soka University, Women’s College donate to relief effort The administration and faculties of Soka University and Soka Women’s College donated 1.87 million yen to The Consortium of Universities in Hachoji, a nonprofit association of 23 academic institutions, public agencies, private industry and 110,000 students.

2011.03.17: Urgent Release: Cancellation of Graduation Ceremonies Soka University and Soka Women’s College has decided to cancel their respective graduation ceremonies that were scheduled to be held on Monday, March 21, 2011. All other events related to the ceremonies will also be cancelled.

2010.10.20: Soka student’s research paper wins award at IEEE event Soka University engineering postgraduate Kiyoshi Nakayama won the Best Paper Award at the International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems, a three-day event held by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) at Moscow, Russia, from October 18 to 20.
2010.10.11: Annual campus festival held Soka University and Soka Women’s College held their annual campus festivals on the weekend of October 10-11. Some 37,000 people, including the general public, enjoyed a wide variety of exhibits, workshops, displays, musical performances, and food.
2010.10.01: Soka participates in international biotech forum The Soka University Liaison Office took part in Bio Japan 2010-World Business Forum held at the Pacifico Yokohama Convention Hall on September 29 to October 1. Among presentation materials put on display by the office were a poster on intellectual property activities and four research themes being conducted by Soka University’s engineering faculty, including “soft” engineering solutions to facilitate coexistence of nature and humanity, as well as a micro-calibration system to measure cellular activity.

2010.08.20: Soka graduate student wins top award at eco-symposium in Thailand Soka University Graduate School of Engineering Nobuyuki Nakatomi, who is majoring in Environmental Engineering for Symbiosis, won the Best Presentation Award in the student competition at the 2nd Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium held in Phuket, Thailand.

2010.08.01: Soka’s teacher education graduate school holds seminar On August 1, Soka University’s Graduate School of Teacher Education held a seminar on campus, with some 170 teaching professionals and students from throughout Japan attending.
2010.07.29: U.S. online science service introduces study by research team led by Soka professor On July 13, PLos one—an interactive online service for peer-reviewed scientific and medical research based in the United States—featured a study on the development of the Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) by a multiple-university research team led by Soka University Department of Bioinformatics Professor Shoko Nishihara.
2010.07.25: Uzbekistan institute awards Soka for Silk Road studies On June 15, the Fine Arts Institute (FAI) of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences presented Soka University with the Ikuo Hirayama Award for its advancement of archaeological research on the Silk Road through the school’s Center for Silk Road Studies.
2010.07.14: Campus-wide disaster response drill set for September Soka University and Soka Women’s College will hold a campus-wide general disaster response exercise on September 17 for the first time.
2010.07.04: Soka runner takes part in 10-k U.S. run in Georgia, USA Soka University Faculty of Business Administration Noriaki Fukushima ran in the AJC Peachtree Road Race on July 4, placing 49th in the annual 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) race in which 55,000 people participated. The race was sponsored by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the largest daily in the state.
2010.06.19: Former Philippine President Ramos donates books to Soka Former President Fidel V. Ramos of the Republic of the Philippines visited Soka University on Saturday to donate a set of works on behalf of his Ramos Peace and Development Foundation. His visit coincided with the 149th anniversary of the birth of Dr. José Rizal, a Filipino polymath and national independence hero of the Philippines.
2010.06.15: Soka microsatellite Negai still going strong Negai, a microsatellite developed by Soka University engineering students led by Dr. Seiji Kuroki, still remains in near-Earth orbit some 20 days after it was launched. The Negai—or “to dream” or “wish” in Japanese—weighs just one kilogram and was designed to stay in orbit for no more than three weeks.
2010.06.14: Soka professor wins prestigious IEEE award At the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Symposium on Circuits and Systems held in Paris, France, from May 30 to June 2, Soka University Department of Information Systems Science Professor Emeritus Dr. Hiroshi Watanabe won the IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award.
2010.06.07: Egyptian ambassador gives special lecture at Soka His Excellency Dr. Walid Mahoud Abdelnasser, Ambassador of Egypt to Japan, delivered a special lecture on Africa in the 21st century and the role of Egypt in the continent’s development, on Monday.
2010.06.04: Renowned Chinese erhu musicians perform at Soka Chinese musician Wang Gutong and his son, Ray Wong, both renowned artists of the traditional two-stringed erhu, performed at a free outdoor concert for the students of Soka University on Friday. The musicians were in Japan on a nationwide tour.
2010.05.21: Soka microsatellite Negai lifts off On May 21, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced the successful liftoff of its H-IIA F17 rocket carrying a four-satellite payload that includes the Venus Climate Orbiter Akatsuki and Negai, a microsatellite developed by Soka University engineering students led by Dr. Seiji Kuroki, professor of information systems science.
2010.05.16: Soka wins baseball league championship The Soka University baseball team became champions of the New Tokyo University Baseball League when it defeated Tokyo International University 2-0 on May 16. The league is comprised of 24 universities in the greater Tokyo area.

2009.12.11: Soka stem cell research study published in online U.S. science journal A new study by a team of Soka University researchers that sheds light on the molecular mechanisms controlling the ability of embryonic stem cells (ESC) to differentiate or become almost any cell in the human body, was published in the online U.S. science journal, PLoS ONE, on December 11.
2009.11.20: New Zealand peace expert lectures at Soka Professor Kevin P. Clements, Director of the New Zealand Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, spoke at Soka University on Friday.
