The university offers numerous study abroad programs, from short-term intensive language courses to one-year exchange programs. Each year some 100 Soka students participate in study abroad programs. In order to encourage the development of individuals with a global perspective and a practical commitment to the welfare of humankind and the cause of peace, Soka University grants an International Scholarship to all exchange students from abroad. Apart from the study abroad programs, various student clubs and circles are active in promoting cultural exchange through their visits to overseas countries, broadening students’ perspectives and building friendships with people in those countries.

As well as encouraging Japanese students to study abroad, the university has been active in receiving students from abroad for various levels of study at Soka University. In 1975, Soka University was the first university in Japan to receive Chinese exchange students. Currently, over 250 international students from 45 countries and regions are enrolled at the university. Various services to support overseas students are available including scholarships and dormitory facilities. The Soka University International Student Society, a friendship association for international students at the university, promotes exchange and facilitates friendship building between foreign and Japanese students on campus. |

There are many student clubs at the university focusing study of overseas countries and regions, including their language and culture. These include clubs focusing on China, Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Africa. As well as promoting study, the clubs develop exchange and friendship with students and youth of those countries. Speech contests at the university in more than ten languages, including English and Hangeul, are a further example of the interest in international exchange at Soka University.
Soka University also frequently hosts international figures, including delegates from overseas universities, scholars, leading intellectuals, artists, political leaders, and ambassadors. Students’ opportunities to meet and interact with people such as Michael Gorbachev, Henry Kissinger, Rosa Parks, and Wangari Maathai enable them to further broaden their global perspectives.
The university is proud to support such opportunities for students to develop their interests in and commitments toward friendship and peace at the global level.
