Opening of the 50th Anniversary Special Exhibition “The History of Soka University”

In order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, we are restricting access onto the university campus. We thank you for your understanding.

On October 7, the opening ceremony for the 50th anniversary SPECIAL exhibition "The History of Soka University" was held in the entrance hall on the 5th floor of the Central Tower.

Following the organizer's greeting by Yasunori Tashiro, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, a tape cutting ceremony was held with Chairperson Tashiro, President Yoshihisa Baba, male and female student representatives, and international student representatives. After the ceremony, the attendees viewed the commemorative exhibition.

In his greeting, Chairperson Tashiro said, "In creating this exhibition, we have received valuable materials from many alumni, and alumni organizations, who donated important photos and memorabilia from the early days of Soka University. I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to this project. I think it is important that many people view the "History of Soka University," and that each and every faculty member, staff member, and student renew their commitment to Soka University’s principles with a sense of "the time is now.”

In addition to the entrance hall on the 5th floor of the main building, exhibits in this permanent exhibition can be found in Exhibition Room 1 (west side), Exhibition Room 2 (east side), and the gallery (corridor) behind the elevator.

In the entrance hall, under the title of "50 Years of Soka University," the history of Soka University is presented ranging from the time the founder announced the idea of establishing the university in 1964 to the present, as well as documenting the changes made to the campus. In Exhibition Room 1, "The Origins of Soka Education" illustrates the three founders of Soka education, in Exhibition Room 2, "To My Beloved Students" imparts the founder's guidance and lectures, and in the gallery, "A University Created by Students" touts the vibrant activities of students thoughout the years. All of the special exhibits have been translated into English and are available in both English and Japanese at the site (equipped with Wi-Fi).

Comments from participants
I was able to learn how Soka University was established and celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, and I felt that we are the ones who will pave the way for the next 50 years. As an international student, I was glad that I was able to see the history of international students in this exhibition. (3rd year undergraduate student)

I was moved to see memorabilia that I usually do not see. I learned about the history of Soka University and could feel the efforts of the pioneers. (3rd year undergraduate student)

*The permanent exhibition, "The Educational and Academic Exchanges of the Founder of Soka University, Daisaku Ikeda: A Path Paved with Academic Honorary Titles," has also been renewed.
We hope you will enjoy the exhibits.
