Professor Kiyoko F. Aoki-Kinoshita, Deputy Director of Soka University Glycan and Life System Integration Center (GaLSIC), has published a paper titled “GlyComb: A Novel Glyconjugate Data Repository That Bridges Glymics and Proteomics” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry on February 2, 2024.

Glycoconjugates, which are formed by the binding of many categories such as glycopeptides, glycoproteins, glycolipids, and glycosides, have important effects on the structure and function of biomolecules and play important roles in diseases such as viral infections and cancers. However, these studies have been hampered by the existence of many types of glycans and the lack of a unified identifier.

GlyComb promotes the study of glycoconjugates by assigning unique identifiers to glycopeptide and glycoprotein data, linking information about these glycans, and facilitating the collection of related information using Semantic Web technologies. This is expected to contribute to the elucidation of disease mechanisms and the discovery of new drug targets.

Professor Kinoshita expressed her strong aspirations for the future: “I am happy that GlyComb has been recognized by top journals such as the Journal of Biological Chemistry and widely notified to the field of biochemistry. We will continue to challenge for further development from Soka University GaLSIC.”
