Professor Berhanu Belay (President of Injibara University and Vice President of the Jimma University of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia of Africa) Visits Soka University

     On February 22 (Thursday), Professor Berhanu Belay (who is president of Injibara University and vice president [assistant research director] of the Jimma University of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia of Africa) visited Soka University and was welcomed by President Yoshihisa Baba and others at the Central Education Tower "Global Square." The following day, on February 23 (Friday), Professor Belay delivered a lecture to regular students, graduate school students, and the faculty and staff of the Faculty of Science and Engineering under the theme of “Research and Educational Programs at Jimma University and Challenges Toward the Opening of Injibara University.”

     The population of Ethiopia is approximately 102 million, and the country is home to 27 universities. Jimma University was established in 1999 and currently has approximately 42,000 students studying in eight faculties. Injibara University is located in Injibara City and opened its doors in January 2018, welcoming approximately 1,450 students in four faculties.

     In his lecture, President Belay shared that Jimma University supports Ethiopia’s development through “science renovation technologies” and places importance on guiding students through research and education initiatives, along with issue resolution-style research projects that are rooted in the community. He explained about the research and education projects initiated by Jimma University as well as the preparations made towards the opening of Injibara University, along with its founding principle and mission.

     President Belay shared how he deeply empathizes with Soka University, as its ideals are similar to the ideals of Injibara University. Meeting with the professors of the Faculty of Science and Engineering made him strongly wish to hold exchanges with them. He also shared his hopes for deeper exchanges, including faculty research and student exchanges.
