The students of the international relations and politics seminar of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts (FILA) held a seminar trip in Beijing, China

The students of the international relations and politics seminar of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts (FILA) traveled to Beijing, China for a seminar trip from February 4 to 7, 2018 with Professor Hartmut Lenz. This trip was conducted to meet with officials at the Asian Infrastructure and Investment Bank.

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is a new multilateral financial institution founded to bring countries together to address the daunting infrastructure needs across Asia. While ADB and World Bank loans support everything from environmental protection to gender equality, the AIIB concentrates its firepower on infrastructure.
Multilateral Development Banks are an important part that needs to be studied as a part of the international relations discipline in FILA. A multilateral development bank (MDB) is an institution, created by a group of countries, that provides financing and professional advising for the purpose of development. MDBs have large memberships including both developed donor countries and developing borrower countries.
After the formation of World Bank and Asian Development Bank, China wanted to have a larger share of voice when it came to providing development aid in Asia. The establishment of the AIIB has been a landmark development in Asian regionalism. Its core mission is to fill infrastructure gaps in Asia – the underdeveloped transport, energy and communication links between economies – by providing a new development bank specializing in infrastructure financing. It has attracted wide support, now counting 70-member states. The AIIB also marks a new phase in China’s economic diplomacy. It is first-time China has proposed, led the negotiations for, and subsequently secured the headquarters of an international organization of any kind. Its existence marks China’s maturation from being an institution-follower to institution-builder in global governance.

The trip was conducted to understand the position of China and the AIIB in a global context of different multilateral banks and the kind of work AIIB is doing currently as well as understanding which projects it is funding around Asia related to infrastructure development.
