Soka University Baseball Team Champions of Kanto Area for the 4th time, first in 7 years!

    On November 1st (Thursday), the Yokohama Mayors Cup the 14th Kanto Area University Baseball Tournament final was held at Yokohama Stadium and Soka University were victorious over Tsukuba University (2nd in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area University Baseball League) 3 to 2, becoming champions of Kanto Area for the 4th time and first in 7 years.

    In the top of the first inning, Soka University gave up a run, but in the bottom of the first inning bases loaded 2 outs, Tsukuba University walked 3rd-year shortstop Atsuya Shimokomaki to tie the game at 1. After, in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th Soka University scored 1 run each to expand the lead to 3-1. Even though, Soka University gave up a run in the top of the 7th, the relay pitching of 3rd-year pitchers Ryuji Komagou, Daiki Mochizuki, and Kouki Sugiyama held on for the 3-2 victory over Tsukuba University.

    The “Best Player Award” was awarded to 3rd year first basemen Kenshin Yamagata, for his three home runs tying the tournament record and the “Best Pitcher Award” was awarded to pitcher Kouki Sugiyama.

    On November 11th (Sunday) the 49th Meiji Jinju Baseball Tournament (National Collegiate Tournament) was held and Soka University lost to Kansai University of International Studies 4 to 2 in the quarterfinals. This was Soka University’s 2nd straight year and 11th appearance in the National Collegiate Tournament.
