Soka University Screens “On Her Shoulders” and “Midnight Traveler” online and Japan for UNHCR’s Mr. Kawauchi gives a lecture as a UNHCR Refugee Film Festival-School Partner

On October 10th (Saturday) and October 30th (Friday), student organization “Aspire Soka”, promoted by both Soka University and peace movement of the United Nations, held a screening event online. Two movies were shown, on the 10th, “On Her Shoulders” and on the 30th, “Midnight Traveler” a total of around 400 people (faculty/staff, students, and the general public) watched online.

UNHCR Film Festival actively holds events to spread the understanding of refugees through films and collaborates with universities and other educational institutions as school partners to develop educational activities. Before the screening of both films, Asahi Koyama (Faculty of Law・4th year) gave a welcoming address and Kakuo Towa (Faculty of International Liberal Arts・4th year) gave a student presentation regarding her internship experience at the Japan Association for Refugees. For the October 30th screening, Japan for UNHCR’s Mr. Kawauchi gave a lecture.

Students that attended the screening said, “I was able to learn the countless persecutions the Yazidi’s faced and how much Nadia's life was changed after one day. She talked many times about her difficulties and painful experiences in front of many people and was deeply touched by her continuous efforts for the Yazidis.” “It was a very valuable opportunity to learn through this movie the reality that is hard to imagine from the word "refugee". With this film festival as an opportunity, I strongly felt the importance to deepen our knowledge about refugees.”
