Free Meals and Other Supplies Provided to Students Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

On July 20 (Tuesday), free vegetables and rice were provided to approximately 500 students who live on their own. This was to support students who are financially influenced by the pandemic with no part-time job opportunities.

Based on November of last year’s (2020) results of a survey conducted by Soka University on the daily life of students, and considering the pandemic’s financial impact on the students, the university provided food and daily necessities as part of an effort to support the students.

Based on the issuance of a state of emergency declaration for Tokyo, Soka University provided student support for the second time. This was for students who missed their chance to receive assistance during the previous time conducted on June 18. For the support distribution, as a preventative measure for the spread of COVID-19 and to avoid crowding inside a venue, the university pre-collected online applications (on a first-come, first-serve basis).
Students who came to the venue received vegetables, rice, cup noodles, drinking water, and masks.
Most of the students that received assistance commented, “I couldn’t work any part-time job due to the pandemic. This kind of support really helps me. Thank you very much!”
