Soka University Student Presents as Student Representative at a Side Event of Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021!

    Daisuke Sasakawa (GCP student), a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Economics participated as the student representative and gave a speech at the thematic session of a side event of The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021 held on December 7 (Tue) and 8 (Wed), organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

    The Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021 is an international meeting aiming at the international promotion of global malnutrition improvement organized by the Government of Japan. Numerous persons related with governments of various countries and international organizations, academic institutions, private enterprises, and others extensively discussed health, food, resilience, and other topics with regard to nutrition improvement of global peoples. The aim is to reach an effective conclusion and therefore, there are numerous side events being held alongside the main event.

    Among those, a thematic session organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, entitled “The UN Food Systems Summit Reform Course to Sustainable Food Systems: Japan’s Food Systems Image Based on the UN Food Systems Summit Summary and ‘Green Food Systems Strategy’” (Chair: Makoto Osawa, former Vice‐Minister for International Affairs、Ministry of Agriculture、Forestry and Fisheries) was held, where Mr. Sasakawa participated as one of the two student representatives, and he presented the importance of community empowerment within international development through an introduction of experience gathered by participation in training in the Philippines, a GCP program of our university.

    Mr. Sasakawa’s comments were as follows: ”This was an opportunity to discuss poverty and food security with governmental representatives and persons from the UN as a student representative. Through participation in this session, I was able to learn many things from those activated in the first lines of global issues solutions. I am strongly determined to use this experience and continue studying in order to help accomplish poverty alleviation based on the development of local industry and creation of employment, set as the future goal.”
