SDGs Minors from 2023 — Promoting SDGs Contribution Through Humanities and Science Crossroad Classes in Addition to Assigned Classes

From 2023, Soka University will be introducing courses on a minor system related to humanities and science SDGs, which can be taken in addition to the main assigned curriculum in each department.

The minor system will guarantee a “wide range of study” by allowing students to take systemic and deeper classes outside of their assigned departments. For example, if a student in the economics department took their assigned economics classes and in addition took the minor SDGs classes, if they have met the requirements (24 credits and a minimum 2.70 GPA at the time of graduation), their grades and graduation certificate will show “Major: Economics” and “Minor: SDGs”.

The SDGs Promotion Center was established in 2019 in order to foster the power needed to contribute to SDGs, and also for general education and research activities. In 2022 the “SDGs Related” classes were added to the syllabus, and students were able to take classes they were interested in from their own syllabus as well as from the 17 SDGs classes.
Under the SDGs minor system introduced in 2023, the shared “Environment and Development” class has been designated a compulsory class for SDGs, and there are 8 humanities and science majors focused on peace, the environment, human rights, and development for which there is a strong link to SDGs.

Further, under the university’s minor system, there is also the “English Medium Program” started in 2018 where all classes are taught in English, and the “Data Sciences Minor” started in 2019 which aims to give birth to more data scientists.
