"Advancing Security and Sustainability at the G7" International Conference was Held

    G7 Research Group, Soka University, co-sponsored by SGI (Soka Gakkai International) and the International Academy for Multicultural Cooperation, held an invitation-only international conference on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the University. and held an invitation-only international conference. The conference, with live streaming, brought together 25-30 experts from education, academia, civil society, and government, in person or online.

    This is an international conference to control nuclear and climate risks and energy security at the Hiroshima Summit in Japan, where we share our perspectives and provide the best analysis and advice. A joint meeting with the G7 Research Group was also held in December 2018 as a research meeting in preparation for the G20 Osaka Summit. 

    The G7 Hiroshima Summit will be held from May 19th -21st, 2023, and will be the first time that the G7 nations will confront two interrelated and potentially global threats to their survival: the danger of nuclear war in Europe and Asia, and irreversible climate change. The G7 Presidency has made these two threats a priority from the outset of the G7 year, along with other pressing issues in the economic, social, environmental, political, and security spheres.

    The opening ceremony featured remarks from Soka University President Masashi Suzuki, G7 Research Group Director and the University of Toronto Professor John Carton, IAMC President Audrey Kitagawa, and SGI General Director for Peace Movements Hirotsugu Terasaki. In addition, Mr. Takashi Ariyoshi, Director, of the Policy Division, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Executive Director, G7 Hiroshima Summit Secretariat, gave a keynote speech titled "Japan's Plans, Priorities, and Preparations for 2023.

    The breakout sessions featured lively discussions on the following topics.
    Session I "G7 Contributions to Global Governance
    Session II "Japan's Contribution to G7 Governance
    Session III "Control of Nuclear Weapons
    Session IV "Strengthening Climate, Energy, and International Health Security

    After this meeting, we will compile the most consensus recommendations and submit them to the G7 secretariat.
