Food and Daily Essentials Provided to Students Living Alone and Affected Financially by the Covid-19 Pandemic

On June 18 (Friday), Soka University provided vegetables, rice, and other living essentials for free of charge to about 400 students living alone. This is to support our students financially affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as declining income due to the loss of part-time job hours.

The university conducted a questionnaire in November 2020 asking our students about their lives. More students answered that "Money sent from family" and "Part-time job income" declined compared to the previous year (2019). Furthermore, some of our students have been facing the loss of income from their part-time jobs since the state of emergency came into force on April 25, 2021, which requested businesses to shorten operating hours. The university procured vegetables, rice, water, and daily necessities to support the affected students, as part of its general support to its students. To avoid increasing the risk of infection, measures were taken at the venue and an online pre-registration system was used (first-come-first-served).

Each of the students who came to the venue received a basic package (food, water, mask), selected their choice of extra items such as ready-to-eat meals, vegetables, rice, and jelly, and packed them in bags provided at the exit. A fourth-year student receiving a package said, "I have been cutting down my food expenses since my part-time income dropped due to shortened business hours. These vegetables, jam, and other items mean a lot to me."
