創価大学ニュース「SUN」101号 2019 Spring

At last academic years’ Board of Trustees meeting, I was reappointed as the president and will be responsible for the Presidents’ role for the next three years. With the cooperation of all the people involved with our university, I am determined to do my best to develop Soka University to its full potential. Soka University is engaged in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Top Global University Project,” partnering and cooperating with faculty members and students across departments to achieve common goals. We are steadily achieving these goals, and we are grateful for the support from everyone involved in the project. As we look towards 2023, the final academic year of the project, we will continue to promote the creation of a diverse campus and foster creative and global citizens who will make international contributions. Most of the plans announced in last year’s President Vision have been implemented and completed thanks to the cooperation and dedicated efforts of everyone involved. For this we express our heartfelt gratitude. Last year saw impressive efforts by our students. One of our students represented Japan in the G(irls)20 Summit 2018, marking the fourth consecutive year that our students participated as representatives of Japan. In addition, students of the Faculty of International Liberal Arts won gold medal at the 5th International Young Inventors Awards 2018 in Indonesia, and a seminar group led by Faculty of Business Administration associate professor Yoshinori Yasuda was given the top prize at the 58th Japan Students Economic Seminar Kanto Division (第58回日本学生経済ゼミナール関東部会) . Faculty of Science and Engineering professor Choi Yongwoon’s seminar team, SOBITS, won second place in the Partner Robot Challenge (Virtual Space), where they competed with teams from around the world. Two teams from the Economic Theory Circle (経済学理論同好会) , which is affiliated with the Faculty of Economics, won first and third place, respectively, at the Economics Record Examination’s 30th Micro and Macro Intercollegiate Competition (経済学検定試験第30回 ミクロマクロ大学対抗戦) , marking the second consecutive top-prize win for a group from our university. Our Soka University Team (「創価大学 チーム」) won the gold medal in the Hip Hop Doubles category of the International University Sports Federation’s first World University Cheerleading Championships in Poland. At the International Cheer Union’s 2018 World Cheerleading Championship in the United States of America, Japan’s national team, of which some of our students are members, won gold medals for the third consecutive year in the Hip Hop Doubles category and for the second consecutive year in the Team Cheer Hip Hop category. Soka University’s Pioneer Wind Orchestra won gold medal at the 66th All-Japan Band Competition for the first time in eleven years, receiving the highest scores from all judges and marking their fourth gold-medal. Our students demonstrated the fruits of their efforts in many other areas, including international conferences, contests, qualification examinations, career development, and regional contributions. We are proud of our students’ success. Our university also had research achievements. A kickoff symposium for the Development of Appropriate Technology and Establishment of Local/ Industrial Foundation for Constructing Sustainable Recycling Society in Developing Countries, adopted by the 2017 Private University Research Branding Project, was held last year, marking the launch of a full-scale research and development. In addition, Graduate School of Engineering professor Ken Furuya, received the 11th Ocean State Promotion Meritorious Award (Prime Minister’s Award) in the Science and Technology Category for “promoting the ocean state of Japan.” As you can see, our university had achievements in various fields of research. We will announce a plan for the university’s founding 50th anniversary commemorative project in April 2019 and commence preparations. At the same time, we will develop the Soka University’s Medium- to Long-term Plan to prepare for our next milestone, the founding 100th anniversary of Soka education on November 18, 2030, and seamlessly continue our university reform beyond our founding 50th year based on insight into the state of the social environment and higher education in 2040. We intend to gain feedback from faculty, students and alumni on our preliminary Medium- to Long-term Plan in order to clarify our strengths and attributes (our strongest pursuits) and develop and implement systematic strategies. These initiatives must be done in order for our university to continue to be chosen and are particularly important for higher education, where the falling birthrate, aging population and globalization are having profound effects. We plan to make a public announcement in the next academic year after we make these considerations. We will make this year hopeful and fruitful, while contributing to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) set by the United Nations, welcoming our 50th anniversary while aiming to become a university that cultivates creative and global citizens. We hope to gain further cooperation and understanding from faculty and students.
