The year 2020, a major international sports event, the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, is scheduled to be held in the summer. Many athletes, personnel, and supporters will visit Japan from all over the world. Also, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, so it will give us numerous opportunities to think about peace. Moreover, Soka University will welcome its 50th class to start this important year towards the auspicious milestone of the University’s 50th anniversary on April 2, 2021. This year, Soka University will receive its second interim evaluation for the Super Global University Project. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the many people involved in the preparations towards steadily achieving our goals for the project. As the final year of the Acceleration Program for University Education Rebuilding (AP Project) has ended, going forward, the University will continue to work to make the learning outcomes based on the project’s outcome further visible. In the research fields, adopted in 2015 by JST-JICA the “Research & Development of Appropriate Technology for Establishing a Recycling-oriented Society in Developing Countries” (Cosmos Project) is welcoming its last year and “a new interdisciplinary research field to contribute to environmental conservation and the elimination of hunger in developing countries through constructing a sustainable recycling society.” (Plankton Eco-engineering adopted by the Private University Research Branding Project in 2017 is being carried out smoothly in Ethiopia, Africa. Regarding the university evaluations, Soka University has received high academic recognitions in various aspects, including “the 4th Japanese university in the global university ranking to measure institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” “ranked higher than the previous year at No. 16 in the ‘internationality’ category of THEWorld University Rankings, Japan edition,” and “ranked 401st – 450th in the QS Asia World University Rankings.” I would like to ask everyone, including instructors and staff, students and other people affiliated with the University, to continue your efforts at achieving higher rankings. I was very surprised at the great achievements of our students last academic year. From January 2 to January 3, 2020, the University participated in the Tokyo-Hakone Intercollegiate Ekiden. This was the third time in the race and first time in 3 years for Soka University. Soka University placed 7th in the first half and 9th in the second half. Overall, the University finished 9th and automatically qualified for next year’s race, this is the first time the university has automatically qualified. This also resulted in an invitation for the first time to the Izumo Ekiden that is scheduled to be held in October of this year. I have high hopes that our team will be even more successful in 2020. In addition, the Soka University Economics Theory Association won first place for the 14th time and for the third consecutive time in Japan at the Economics Record Examination (ERE) University Contest. Sixteen students passed the national bar examination in 2019 where the passing rate was 6th among private universities. In addition, seminars from respective faculties saw great achievements in different business contests by being awarded Grand Prize and also students were able to show the outcomes of their daily activities in various areas at many other international conferences and contests, qualification exams, career paths, and regional contributions. I would like to express my respect for those efforts. This year, we will be the aiming towards the next 50 years, and formulate Soka University Future Concept “Soka University Grand Design 2030” under the basis of a “university that fosters ‘global citizens’ that can create value.” Also for this year, as part of the Soka University 50th Anniversary Commemorative Project announced in April of last year, researchers will be invited from all over the world to participate in the “11th International Academic Symposium on the Philosophy of Daisaku Ikeda” this fall. Researchers will give presentations on the founder’s ideas, philosophy, and education. The Soka University 50th Anniversary Commemorative Project will be sequentially implemented as planned in various areas.
