Political Economy of
Japan and Asia

This course aims to help students understand the historical background and process of economic and political development of Japan and East Asia, including China, Korea、Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and ASEAN countries. The political and economic structural changes in the region since China’s emergence as a big political and economic power, especially after the late 1990s, will also be investigated. This new regional configuration of power and economy leads to discussions on the idea of new regional order of political economy such as the ‘East Asian Community.’ Furthermore, Japan’s vision and policies on East Asia, for example, the ‘East Asian Community’ and its alternatives will also be analyzed.
