On July 7, 2023, the symposium on Representation of India in Japanese History was held as the second symposium toward the Fourth International Conference which is scheduled in November. Three speakers shared different perspectives on the topic; Professor Mukesh Williams, Advisor to SARC, Assistant Professor Dias Mario Antony from St. Stephens College, and Dr. Ui Teramoto, a visiting researcher at SARC.

Prof. Williams spoke about the ten ways in which history has been constructed in Japan over 100 years. Prof. Dias Mario Antony focused on the Writings of Okakura Tenshin and representations of the geography of India. Dr. Ui Teramoto shared the Representations of India in Japanese History Textbooks in the early Meiji Period.

The symposium emphasized the roles of Bodhisena and Okakura Tenshin in establishing the connection between India and Japan, brought up the importance of cartography, and the impact of history textbooks in Japan. The talks by the speakers were followed by some questions and comments by the attendees.
