January 26–27, 2015 Faculty Members Attend Basic Course in Action Learning

Faculty members of Soka University attended a basic course in Action Learning. Four members of the AP promotion team from the Faculty of Business Administration attended the two-day course at the National Children’s Castle in Shibuya, Tokyo. During the morning session on Day One, the participants listened as the instructor presented a general overview of Action Learning. In the afternoon, they attended another lecture on the process of Action Learning and took part in two Action Learning sessions, working in groups of six. After the sessions, they reflected on their learning experience. On Day Two, they attended a lecture on the roles and characteristics of a facilitator, took part in three Action Learning sessions, discussed some key points in the stages of adopting the Action Learning process, and looked at several case examples.

Here is what the participants had to say:
“Through the process of insightful questioning, a process of asking questions to clarify the exact nature of the problem, I realized that questioning is a key component of the PDCA cycle, and that it enhances active learning.”
“Throughout this course, I kept thinking about how I should apply Action Learning in solving problems, such as those involving my colleagues or SAs, who serve as student leaders.”
“Some people said that we should also discuss how to implement Action Learning in class, or how to train SAs.”
