Action learning training

January 26–27, 2015, Soka Faculty Attend Basic Course in Action Learning as Training

Four members of the AP promotion team in the Faculty of Business Administration attended a two-day basic course in action learning offered at National Children’s Catle, Kodomo no Shiro, in Shibuya, Tokyo. On the first day, the instructor delivered lectures on what action learning (AL) is in the morning, and on how to understand the process of AL in the afternoon. Then the participants worked in groups of six through two sessions and reviewed what they had learned (“reflection”) at the end of the day. On the second day, the instructor delivered a lecture on the roles and characteristics of a learning coach, and provided three sessions to reflect on important points in the steps of adopting the AL process, and on case examples.

What the participants say
・“We had an action learning meeting (a session in which one person presents an issue and the others ask him/her questions to get to the core of the problem and find solutions). This hands-on experience had me realize the importance of incorporating action learning meetings into the PDCA for in-depth active learning.”
・“As I worked through the training, I kept thinking how I, as a faculty member, should apply what I learned there to problem-solving between colleagues, as well as between SA students acting as student leaders.”
・“Some of the participants said we should also explore how to incorporate AL into the classroom and how to train SAs.”
