Lecture Held by President Megawati Sukarnoputri (Fifth President of the Republic of Indonesia) Commemorating her Visit to Soka University

On January 8 (Wednesday), the fifth President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who is the first female president of the Republic of Indonesia (October 2001–October 2004), visited Soka University and was welcomed by Board of Trustees Chair Yasunori Tashiro, President Yoshihisa Baba, representatives of faculty and staff, and students and international students.

Her Excellency Ms. Megawati’s lecture took place at Global Square’s Classroom AW303, attended by 150 students. The theme of the lecture was “Pancasila of the Indonesian State (Five Founding Principles of the State)/Humanism and Post-Truth,” during which she shared the importance of humanism. Learning from the lessons of World War 2, Her Excellency Ms. Megawati referred to Pancasila philosophy (the Five Founding Principles of the State), which served as the key ideology of the nation, and, in expressing her expectations to the students in attendance, she said, “True humanism is needed for the sake of peace. This spirit not only applies to Indonesia but throughout the world. You are all learning this spirit at Soka University. Please continue to ask yourselves, ‘Am I a genuine human being?’ I was the first female president of my country. I encouraged all women to challenge themselves in everything they do without being cowardly and toward not being dominated by men.”

Before the lecture, a Soka University honorary doctorate degree was conferred upon Her Excellency Ms. Megawati for her contributions as a global leader and as her country’s first female leader.
