Associate Professor Mrs. Kakegawa of the Faculty of Economics participated in the International Symposium on Climate Change in Southeast Asia (online)

The Southeast Asia Climate Change Program of the Yusof Ishak Institute, an independent research institute established at the initiative of the Singapore government, held a workshop in October 2021 for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and others to discuss issues related to climate risk and urban development, and how cities are responding to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The workshop discussed issues related to climate risk and urban development, and how cities are responding to climate change mitigation and adaptation, based on recent research. Based on the workshop, a case study collection of research findings that can be used as a policy reference to further promote climate change countermeasures was published, and among the case studies, three research papers were selected, including one by Associate Professor Michiyo Kakegawa of the University's Faculty of Economics. The symposium was held online on March 6, 2012. Associate Professor Kakegawa of the Faculty of Economics was also invited to present her research.

The symposium featured a presentation by a University of the Philippines (Baguio) professor (political science) on the recent severe water shortage problem in Baguio City, followed by a presentation by an Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry official on Jakarta's progress in combating climate change using intercity networks, and then Associate Professor Kakegawa gave a presentation on " The Role of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in Promoting Sustainable Climate Change Adaptation: The Case of Japanese ODA in Vietnam". In his presentation, he suggested that Japan's climate change adaptation cooperation in Vietnam has mainly focused on adaptation measures through infrastructure construction and technical cooperation (training), but that a community-focused, ecosystem services approach (nature-based approach) may also be an effective tool. He suggested that Japan and its partner countries should consider more actively incorporating ecosystem service-based approaches into their ODA projects in the future.

After this symposium, Associate Professor Mrs. Kakegawa said, "The impact of climate change is changing the nature of ODA, cooperation, and approaches internationally. I would like to continue my research so that local communities can take action easily and quickly, build the capacity to adapt to climate change at the grassroots level, and encourage projects that are sustainable, especially those that actively use ecosystem service approaches."
