[Oct. 19 (Fri)] Soka University to screen "I am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts" as a UNHCR Refugee Film Festival-School Partner

Soka University will be screening "I am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts" as a UNHCR Refugee Film Festival-School Partner on October 19th (Fri)

As a member of the "UNHCR Refugee Film Festival-School Partners", for the 13th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival, Soka University will be showing "I am Rohingya: A Genocide in Four Acts". This will be the first time it will be shown in Japan.
UNHCR Film Festival actively holds events to spread the understanding of refugees through films, and collaborates with universities and other educational institutions as school partners to develop educational activities.
In response to the refugee issues, UNHCR is implementing "Goal 2: Zero Hunger", "Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being", "Goal 4: Quality Education" out of 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). With the hope that through this movie each person can confront the refugee issues, which in turn will lead to moving closer to achieving the SDGs, it was decided to hold the screening at Soka University.
The screening will be held at Global Square’s Discovery Hall, as a joint collaboration with the university’s student organization, “ASPIRE SOKA,” that promotes the peace movement established by the United Nations.

The representative of ASPIRE SOKA Ms. Yuna Koga (Faculty of Law 4th year) said, "At the Film Festival this year, we will be introducing "Rohingya", the most persecuted people in the world. This problem occurring in various places, including Asia, is not a problem far from us. We will put all of our efforts to prepare for this event, so that we can provide an opportunity for people to think deeply about how they can help with refugee problems."

    Summary:
Sharing a title with the award-winning play of the same name, I Am Rohingya chronicles the journey of fourteen refugee youth who take the stage in order to depict their families' harrowing experiences during the on-going Burmese genocide of Rohingya Muslims. Leading up to the opening night of their performance, the film takes audiences through the personal lives of the child performers, capturing their struggles as they adjust to their new lives in Canada, and exploring the difficult rehearsal process of recreating scenes of horror. With no prior acting experience, these youth must come together and re-enact the stories of their people in order to show the world that they will not be forgotten.
