In order to get a high score on test, not only it is important to increase your English level, but it is also important to practice the test-taking strategies. Increase your English ability by “learning the basics” and “practicing speaking”, and study a textbook to learn test-taking strategies.

There are various textbooks available for the tests. It is advisable to choose the ones with practice exams, in order to get accustomed to the test format. Also, it is recommended to choose the ones with audio CDs, good explanations, and reader-friendly layout, so that is easier to study by yourself.

Once you choose a textbook, don’t write down the answers on the book, but study it repeatedly about three times. By repeating, you can get accustomed to the test format as well as find your weaknesses. The next step would be to choose textbooks for the sections which you found as your weak points, again study repeatedly (about three times), and overcome your weaknesses.

Once you choose a textbook, you should try to finish it. Some people study many textbooks at the same time without completing any of them, thinking “Is this textbook really good? There may be something better out there.” First, you should complete a textbook or you will not see the improvement. Once you start the textbook, study it at least for three months. Also, don’t leave the questions unanswered. If you don’t understand, check the vocabulary using a dictionary, read explanations, and try to understand why you missed the correct answer.

It is also recommended that students take the actual test several times. Especially tests like TOEFL and TOEIC, it is not easy to get the high score you want on the first try. By taking the test several times, you will get used to taking the test under pressure, and also you will notice your weak points. Let’s challenge ourselves!
