ＵＣＳＦベニオフ小児病院を見学させていただく機会があり、お会いすることができないと思っていたチャイルドライフスペシャリスト(CCLS)にお会いすることができた。
そして直接インタビューする機会を与えてくださった。
インタビューでは、自分の病気を受け入れられない子どもとの直接的な関わり方・子どもにとって一番つらい治療・CCLSの技術・家族との関わりについて聞くことができた。
彼女の子どもや家族に対する思いやりと包み込むような優しさを感じ、とても刺激を受けた。
We had a chance to visit UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. I was able to meet and interview a Certified Child Life Specialist who works for the hospital. I asked her how CCLSs take care of their clients by focusing on what skills CCLSs use and what way CCLSs support children and thier family who have to go through painful medical procedures. Her warmth and affection toward the children and their family deeply inspired me.

子どもたちは入院すると、彼らの色々なコントロールを失ってしまうため、年齢や個性に合ったやり方で感情を表現できるようにしてあげることがとても大切である。
子どもたちにとって一番つらい治療は、鼻から管を通す経鼻チューブである。
その理由としては、息ができないように感じてしまうからである。
そのような痛みを伴う治療を行うとき、シャボン玉やiPadを用いて、痛みから気を逸らすことのできるようにする。
家族との関わりでは、子どものいないところで今抱えている不安をすべて吐き出してもらい、アドバイスをしたり、病院に在籍しているソーシャルワーカーと連携し、退院後のサポートをしたりしている。
When children come to the hospital, a lot of their controls is being taking away, so it is important to have the children express their feeling in a way that they feel comfortable with. The hardest procedure that the children may have to go through would be insertion of an NG-tube. During the procedure, they might feel like they would not be able to breathe. CCLSs use bubbles and play games on an iPad to make their minds off from the pain. The children's family should be informed about the procedures that their children are going through. CCLSs cooperate with social workers and they can support family after children were being discharged from the hospital.
