Refugee Film Festival Partners' "The Great Green Wall" screening held at our university on October 12th and 17th
As a participant of the UNHCR's Refugee Film Festival Partners, our university will be holding screenings of the film "The Great Green Wall" (directed and executive produced by Academy Award-nominated director Fernando Meirelles of "City of God") on Sunday, October 12th and Friday, October 17th. On Friday, October 17th, you will also be able to see an opening act by our university's Pan-African Friendship Society.
The Refugee Film Festival, organized by the Japan Association for UNHCR, aims to spread understanding of refugees through film, and partners with educational institutions as well as companies, organizations, and local governments to carry out awareness-raising activities.
We believe that engaging each individual in the refugee issue through film will bring us closer to achieving the SDGs. As a spin-off of the Refugee Film Festival, our university has been holding annual film screenings since 2018 in collaboration with ASPIRE SOKA, a student group at our university that promotes the peace movement defined by the United Nations.
The film being screened this time is "The Great Green Wall," a music documentary about Inna Monja, a musician from the Republic of Mali, who travels to the front lines of climate change to connect people through music and realize the grand African dream.
Details of the screening at our university are as follows. Anyone can participate, including students, faculty, and staff of our university, as well as local residents. Please feel free to apply.

<Overview>
The Sahel region of Africa is one of the most vulnerable places on Earth in the face of climate change. To combat climate change, the Great Green Wall project, the largest reforestation project in human history, was launched in 2007. It spans 8,000 kilometers across the African continent. Upon completion, it will be a global miracle, improving the lives of countless people. To realize her ambitious African Dream, world-renowned Malian musician Inna Moja embarked on a journey across Africa. Along the way, from Senegal to Ethiopia, she produced music with Senegalese hip-hop pioneer Didier Awaddi, Malian blues band Songoy Blues, and Nigerian Waje, and performed live in various locations. Passionate about supporting women, Moja believes that "women are always at risk in conflicts." While shocked by the harsh reality of their situations through her encounters with girls orphaned by conflict, she continues to send a message of encouragement for an Africa where dreams can flourish: "Believe in your dreams."
