Message from Chairperson, Board of Trustees

Chairperson, Board of Trustees Yasunori Tashiro

Since its founding, Soka University has focused on nurturing "global citizens" who put value creation into practice, based on Founding Spirit set forth by the founder, Daisaku Ikeda. In order to meet the needs of society, the university has established and reorganized faculties and departments, and has developed into a comprehensive university with faculties (commuting and correspondence courses), a graduate school, and a women's junior college, with over 105,000 graduates in total who are active in various fields both domestically and internationally.

The mid- to long-term plan "Soka University Grand Design 2021-2030," aiming for the 100th anniversary of Soka Education in 2030, is focusing on four areas: education, research, SDGs, and diversity. As part of the plan, the "Ikeda Research Institute for Soka Education," which was renamed the Soka Education Research Institute in 2021, aims to build a base for global citizenship education and is focusing on building a network of researchers and disseminating the results of education and research.
In 2024, an international symposium was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the meeting between founder Ikeda and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, bringing together 138 researchers from 45 universities and institutions from seven countries. Keynote speeches and paper presentations were given under the theme of "Peace and Development through Dialogue," providing an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding about the importance of dialogue that transcends cultures and values in an international society where conflict and division are on the rise.

This year, Soka University and Soka Women’s College College will continue to strive to cultivate talented people who will contribute to world peace and prosperity, and will continue to uphold the tradition of "students first" that our founder demonstrated through his own actions. All faculty and staff will continue to work hard to realize the ideal campus.

Message from President

President Masashi Suzuki

Soka University was founded in 1971 by its founder, Professor Daisaku Ikeda, with the Founding Spirit of "Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education," "Be the cradle of a new culture," and "Fortress to Protect the Peace of Mankind."

Since its inception, the university has promoted the internationalization of educational programs and academic exchange with overseas universities, and has now concluded academic exchange agreements with 263 universities in 69 countries and regions around the world, and has realized a campus where people with diverse values and backgrounds can learn from each other, such as through student exchange and research exchanges. The success of students has also been remarkable, and as a result of the 2024 academic year, six students from the Law School students (including graduates) of our university have passed the bar examination, bringing the total number of successful applicants to 454 since the opening of the university. In addition, they won an off-campus business contest, won the first national championship for the baseball team, won a gold medal at the World University Cheerleading Tournament, and passed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Professional Staff Recruitment Examination as a three-person student.

The medium- to long-term plan "Soka University Grand Design 2021-2030" aimed at 2030 has the theme of "a university that fosters 'global citizens' who practice value creation." In April 2026, we plan to open a "Faculty of Economics and Business Administration Department of Business Studies (*)" to cultivate the ability to solve social issues. In addition, we are envisioning the establishment of a Faculty of Science and Engineering Department of Green Technology (*) that aims to solve environmental problems through energy-saving and energy-creating technologies, and a Department of Life Science and Technology (*) that creates a well-being society centered on life science. In addition, in order to more clearly convey the educational content and characteristics of the department, the Department of Law of Faculty of Law will be renamed "Department of Law and Political Science" and the Department of Education of Faculty of Education will be changed to "Psychology and Department of Education".

Based on the Founding Spirit set forth by our founder, Dr. Ikeda, all of our faculty and staff will make further efforts to help each student develop their potential on a diverse campus.

Tentative name, under construction. This is planned and subject to change.
