Message Director
In 1975, Soka University concluded an academic exchange agreement with Moscow State University. Since then, we have continued to have active exchanges with universities in Russian-speaking countries. Currently, we have concluded agreements with over 20 universities in Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, and other countries, and continue to exchange with them. A total of over 500 students have studied at both universities through exchange programs, and they are active in various fields of society as human resources who act as bridges of friendship.
In 1990, the Russian major was established in the Department of Foreign Languages in Faculty of Letters at our university, and even after undergoing reorganization into a specialization and major system, the university has continued to offer Russian language education. To date, over 700 students have graduated from our university with a Russian major.
Based on these achievements, we opened the "Soka University Russia Center" in 2016, and have continued to support Russian language learners and promote cultural and academic exchange with universities in Russian-speaking countries. Over 1,600 people have already visited the Russia Center, which is serving as a platform for deepening mutual understanding and friendly exchange.
Through the activities of the Russia Center, we would like to continue to contribute to promoting friendship between Japan and Russian-speaking countries.

Soka University 50th Anniversary
Mikhail Lomonosov was a Russian scholar who made pioneering contributions in many fields.
To commemorate his 310th anniversary, the Soka University Russia Center, in collaboration with Moscow State University, has organized a web exhibition showcasing his achievements.
Past Exhibitions
To commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Russian female poet Bergolitz, the Soka University Russia Center had planned an exhibition that would highlight her encouraging broadcasts during the siege of Leningrad during WWII. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the physical exhibition was switched to an online event, and a special website was launched in December 2020. The exhibition pays tribute to those who overcame hardships during the war and to the courage of Bergolitz.

Congratulatory message from Mr. Gorbachev
To all students, faculty and staff of Soka University
Dear Friends!
I am very happy to hear that the first Russian Center at a Japanese university will be opening at Soka University. I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to everyone, and above all to my good friend and founder of Soka University, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda Ikeda. It was Dr. Ikeda who paved the way for friendly exchanges with the Soviet Union in the 1970s. Thanks to him, many Japanese students have begun to study Russian language and Russian history and culture. Since then, Soka University has produced a succession of Russian experts, contributing to deepening the ties between the two countries.
I hope that Soka University's Russia Center will continue to broaden and deepen the circle of friendship between Russia and Japan.
I wish you all peace and prosperity.
