research content

The first is research on well-being in development. In particular, we regard development as the "systematic pursuit of well-being," and pursue a definition of "well-being" based on Doyal and Gough's human needs approach and Amartya Sen's capability approach, as well as a value approach to development. The second is regional integration research from the perspective of building an international and regional economic cooperation system that enables a dynamic development process in Asian developing countries.

Research and Education Policy

The two research projects mentioned above are ongoing. Our educational policy is to nurture students who have both "intelligent minds" and "kind hearts."

Interview

Please introduce yourself.

I have been interested in and have been researching Southeast Asia and South Asia, among other "developing country economies." During graduate school, I studied abroad in Thailand, and have since traveled to various regions of Southeast Asia and India. I love traveling, especially by train. I am a student in the sixth batch of this university.

Please tell us about your research.

Believing that regional economic cooperation among developing economies is necessary for development, I have been researching developing countries, particularly ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). After the Asian currency crisis of 1997, I shifted my focus to research on poverty and well-being.

What kind of contributions to society do you expect as your research progresses?

Economic growth and development do not necessarily lead to the resolution of poverty or improvement of people's quality of life. As can be seen in the reproduction of poverty, the widening gap, and environmental destruction, we must rethink the original form of the economy, which contributes to human happiness and the good life.

What can you learn in the seminar?

We use group learning and discussion methods to learn about the current situation and issues of developing countries' economies, and how to solve poverty and disparity issues. Recently, we have been researching "inclusive business" through cooperation between governments, private companies, NGOs, etc.

Please say a few words to all the students.

We live in the midst of an age of globalization, so please study languages with determination, gain plenty of overseas experiences, and build a network of friendships around the world.
