research content

Research on the plays of Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953), who established modern American drama and played a major role in the history of world drama. The research theme is a multifaceted and systematic analysis of O'Neill's complex and difficult works from the perspectives of Freud, Jungian psychology, Nietzsche's philosophy, and Eastern thought. His main book, "The Essence of O'Neill Drama" (Osaka Kyoiku Tosho, 2003), is a historical arrangement of the works that O'Neill published when he was at the peak of his maturity and engaged in active creative activities, and is a compilation of them as a system of O'Neill's plays.
Recent papers include "A Study of Long Journey Into Night: The Complexity of Behavioral Patterns Mediated by Social and Psychological Depth" (Senshu Humanities Review, No. 84, Senshu University Press, 2009), "A Study of Moonlighting on the Shadows: Conflict and Fusion Seen in Social Class Structure" (Bulletin of Institute of Oriental Philosophy, No. 26, Institute of Oriental Philosophy 2010), and "The Complex Deep Structure Surrounding Illusion - Focusing on Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet" (Senshu Humanities Review, No. 87, Senshu University Press, 2010), which mainly discuss O'Neill's later works.
His English papers include Conflict and Union in Desire Under the Elms (Senshu Jinbunronshu No. 89, Senshu University Press, 2011) and Expressionism and the Psychoanalysis of Freud and Jung in Anna Christie (BULLETIN OF THE INSTITUTE OF ORIENTAL PHILOSOPHY No. 27, 2011).

Research and Education Policy

Further systematize Eugene O'Neill's theatrical ideas. Analyze and elucidate what other American playwrights inherited from O'Neill (especially his dramatic techniques). In terms of education, students are required to join specialized academic societies and give presentations at academic conferences. To achieve this, students are required to regularly present papers on their research themes, and each time they are thoroughly discussed, with the goal of producing a higher level of thesis.
