research content

Legal history is an academic field that studies the history of law in the past to elucidate what law has been in Japan and consider what the law should be in the new era.

The Edo period was filled with mysterious figures and strange laws, but the modern state and society exist on the foundation of the activities and legal reforms of these predecessors. Why not deepen your interest in law and history and join us in exploring the fascinating forest of historical materials?
Characteristics of the seminar (1)
Legal history is an academic field that spans both the fields of law and history, so the names of historical figures are thrown around and Eastern and Western legal theories are discussed in the seminar, making it a unique seminar among Faculty of Law. However, by studying the history of law, students can gain a holistic view of law itself and gain a multifaceted perspective, so there is a reason for it to exist in Faculty of Law students study law.
Characteristics of the seminar (2)
If you are unsure of your career path, are interested in going abroad, or would like to broaden your image of law, please come to our seminars. In our seminars, students will have fun studying together, focusing on presentations by each group, and will look at their future and prepare to enter society. The main subject of study is the Edo period, which is currently attracting a great deal of attention from overseas in terms of law and culture, but in order to talk to people from other countries, you will need knowledge to be able to talk about your own country. Furthermore, why not rediscover Japan, which is filled with a rich legal sense that cannot be understood through Western eyes alone?
Characteristics of the seminar (3)
Former German President Richard von Weizsäcker argued that "Those who close their eyes to the past are ultimately blind to the present" (Forty Years in the Wilderness). Legal history studies the legal history of the past, but it is an academic field that aims to understand the present era and to envision outstanding laws and systems for the future. This is where a deeper interest in law is born.
