Our student's efforts win the Newcomer Award at the Sustainable Campus Awards 2025!
Sustainability-related initiatives led by Sachiyo Nomura of the Faculty of Business Administration of TUFS and Shun Chonabayashi of the Faculty of Economics won the "Newcomer Award" in the "Student Activity Category" of the "Sustainable Campus Award 2025" sponsored by the Sustainable Campus Promotion Council (CAS-Net JAPAN). This award is a special award that recognizes particularly outstanding activities among organizations that are applying for the first time.
The Sustainable Campus Award is a system that recognizes the efforts of faculty, staff, students, companies, etc. at universities and higher education institutions to achieve the SDGs and build a sustainable campus, with the aim of contributing to the construction of a sustainable and environmentally friendly society. Since FY2015, we have been evaluating and awarding in four categories: Architecture and Facilities Category, University Management and Regional Cooperation Category, Student Activities Category, and Private Business Category.
Under the theme of "Realizing a Circular Economy from Campus and the Road to Carbon Neutrality," Faculty of Business Administration 's Nomura Seminar focused on three fields: clothing, food, and paper, and took on the challenge of transitioning to a circular economy with students taking the lead in transitioning to a circular economy. In particular, we addressed the issue of clothing loss, and developed practical initiatives such as the production and sale of eco-friendly T-shirts, in addition to collection activities.
Faculty of Economics 's Cho Nabayashi Seminar focused on reducing single-use waste under the theme of "Measures to Promote Environmentally Friendly Behavior by Students at Soka University." We devised and implemented measures such as promoting garbage separation and reducing the use of disposable cutlery, and verified their effectiveness through thorough quantitative research and analysis. With this, we presented a concrete and scientific approach to enhancing students' environmentally friendly behaviors.
The award ceremony was held at the "CAS-Net JAPAN 2025 Annual Conference" held on Saturday, November 8 at Hokkaido University's Sapporo Campus, and students from both seminars reported on the projects they won awards. The judging committee highly praised the students' initiative in tackling environmental issues in a practical and quantitative manner.
Students from Nomura Seminar and Chonabayashi Seminar said, "I am honored to receive such an award for my first application, and I would like to continue to involve the entire campus and further develop our activities."
