On November 12, 2025, Professor Michiyo Kakegawa of the University of Faculty of Economics introduced the university's efforts toward carbon neutrality at a side event of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Belém, Brazil in November of the same year.

During COP30, the government-approved Japan Pavilion hosted a seminar titled "The Role and Prospects of Universities for Achieving Net Zero by 2050," hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and co-organized by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). Professor Kakegawa participated online as one of the representatives of the "University Coalition Contributing to the Achievement of Carbon Neutrality", in which our university also participates.

Professor Kakegawa gave a presentation on the theme of "Target-Setting and Strategy Development towards Carbon Neutral by 2050: Case of SOKA University, Japan." He mentioned that while participating in the coalition, the university reaffirmed the need to reduce CO₂ emissions from universities by 2050 and quickly achieve carbon neutrality. We introduced the initiatives that the university has been promoting so far, such as system development, strategy formulation, and the creation of CO₂ reduction scenarios. In addition, based on CO₂ reduction scenarios, we reported on the status of activities being promoted in collaboration between students and faculty and staff through classes, seminars, and dialogues within the university.

In addition to TUFS, Kumamoto University, Tokai University, Hokkaido University, and Waseda University also announced their efforts. In addition, presentations by youth representatives from Japan and Malaysia and case studies from overseas universities were presented, and the university's stance to work together to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 was shared.

Professor Kakegawa said, "It was a great honor to be able to introduce our university's initiatives at the COP30 side event, and we will continue to work with students to promote research and social implementation toward the goal of achieving carbon neutrality on campus."
