We have signed an exchange agreement with the United Nations University.
On Thursday, May 7, the University of Japan signed an exchange agreement with the United Nations University (UNU), a United Nations think tank and graduate educational institution, to further strengthen cooperation in the fields of education and research. The signing ceremony was attended by UNU President Chirizi Marwala (UN Under-Secretary-General), Chief of Staff Michael Bardock, President Yoshihide Akiya of the University and President Mika Suzuki of the University.
The university has accumulated a track record of accepting refugee students through the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) education program, as well as multifaceted collaborations with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This collaboration with UNU will further expand the global network of the university.
Based on this agreement, we plan to develop the following measures to promote the development of global human resources who will contribute to solving global issues.
- Support for further education: Consideration of measures to encourage graduates of this university to pursue graduate studies at the United Nations University.
- Educational Program: Student dispatch to a short-term, intensive "boot camp" where students learn directly from UN officials.
- Career Development: Provision of Junior Fellowship Programs and Internship Opportunities at the United Nations University
At the press conference, President Marwara said that he would like to foster international understanding among students through strengthening cooperation and build a "culture of peace" through active educational and research exchanges. President Suzuki said that he would like to produce more global citizens who contribute to world peace.
After the signing ceremony, a commemorative lecture titled "The Vision of the United Nations University and Its Practice" by President Marwala was held at the Global Square SPACe Learning Arena, attended by approximately 100 students, faculty and staff.
After introducing an overview of the UNU's efforts in education and research to realize a sustainable society, President Marwala said that it is necessary to work on the promotion of the SDGs and AI education through global collaboration to solve global issues, and expressed his hope that young people will be indispensable as agents of future change.
In the Q&A session after the lecture, there was a lively exchange of opinions with students on various global issues, and it was a place for meaningful exchanges.
