A paper by a Graduate School of Letters doctoral student at our university has been published in 'Philosophy,' a leading academic journal in the field of philosophy

Graduate School of Letters Shunsuke Kiyota, a doctoral student in the Humanities specializing in philosophy and history, published his paper "Is the Quine True Theory Deflationary? — The Quine True Theory as a Property Inflationary Theory" published in the leading academic journal in the field of philosophy, 'Philosophy' (a research journal of the Philosophical Society of Japan).

The question "What is truth?" has always been a major topic of discussion in Western philosophy. Within this framework, a concept called "deflationism" has been proposed in recent years, which attempts to minimize the theoretical role traditionally thought to be played by the concept of truth, and various debates have been taken regarding the understanding of this deflationary truth.

W.O. Quine, a leading American philosopher of the 20th century, has often been regarded as a representative of deflationism, but Mr. Kiyota carefully combines the close reading of Quine's original texts with the insights of modern precise truth analysis, and in this paper, presents a new interpretation that Quine cannot actually be considered a deflationist in certain important respects. Mr. Kiyota's paper suggests possibilities for constructing new true theories beyond just interpreting Quine.

Mr. Kiyota said, "In writing the main paper, I received valuable comments from Professor Ryo Chonabayashi and Professor Nobuo Kurata from our university, which was a tremendous encouragement and helped me improve my paper. Also, at last year's Work in Progress Seminar, mainly attended by graduate students and faculty in philosophy within the university, we had meaningful discussions with participants, which helped us refine our thesis. I sincerely thank everyone involved and the families who always support me. We will continue to devote ourselves sincerely to research." he said.
